I agree – We live locally in the Santa Clarita Valley, we are Real Estate Agents and are raising our kids in the SCV and we also have one set of parents locally as well.

I was full time PD when we first moved the family, everyone, out to the Santa Clarita Valley and I was surprised how many deputy sheriff’s, police officers, highway patrol officers, fire fighters and other emergency personnel, call The Santa Clarita Valley their home as well.

Back in the day when the cop’s Fannie Pack (gun in bag) was the thing to wear, there was almost no place we could go without spotting one of the fashion fopas of today.  Plus working Motors and Teaching various Firearms, Drug, DUI, Radar/Laser, as a certified LAPD instructor put me into touch with a HUGE amount of other men and women that were in my chosen profession with other agencies from around the world.

Not much has changed except we are getting older.  I am now a Reserve for LA – stepping down from full time “cop” has been strange to say the least.

When thinking “relocation” – I would always think, OMG – Where do I start.

I would have to take some quite time with a blank pad of paper and do a little mind mapping.  Make Relocation the center point within the blank canvas.  Circle the word Relocation.

Then start thinking about all of the things that draw you back to the word.  I would line out and write “family” because they are the top of my priority list – Then from that new circle – I would attach another line to a point in space and place the word or words, “Schools, Daycare, babysitting…”  Etc…

Each of those points would have to be answered at some point.

I would then take another line to another point on the canvas and write “Where”.

That is where I would expand on all of the possibilities with regard to employment, schools, price-range, safety – Etc…

There are a lot of steps to Relocation.  If your Human Relations department is heading your ship, make sure you are asking them a lot of questions.  Also, get names and phone numbers of others with your company that they have relocated to where you are headed.
